Membership Benefits

These are the benefits from a membership in the Orchid Society of South East Asia:

 

  • Opportunities to network and share knowledge and experience with other orchid enthusiasts

 

  • Opportunities to volunteer at sales booths set up by OSSEA in orchid shows and garden festivals, as well as other activities

 

  • Monthly meetings, typically on the first Sunday afternoon of each month at the Singapore Botanic Gardens with:

 

  • o A talk by a member or an invited guest on orchids, orchid growing or reports on orchid shows or excursions
  • o An occasional plant clinic for members to bring in their plants for specific advice on plant diseases, potting mediums, growing environments, watering, fertilizing or pest control methods, etc. 
  • o An orchid table display competition for members to compete with their own plants and for those who just wish to display interesting plants without competing
  • o Educational commentaries on each of the entries to the orchid displays
  • o A tea-break with free refreshments
  • o An auction of orchid plants or cut flowers, with proceeds going to OSSEA
  • o A lucky draw of orchid plants, with proceeds going to OSSEA
  • o Sale of books and fertilisers by OSSEA and sale of orchid plants and accessories by invited vendors outside the meeting

 

  • Visits to orchid nurseries, both locally and overseas, organized by OSSEA

 

  • Excursions organized by OSSEA to overseas orchid shows and nurseries and trekking through forest reserves to view wild orchids

 

  • Free entry to OSSEA talks at the Gardeners’ Day Out, a monthly event at HortPark

 

  • Publications by OSSEA given free to each member:

 

  • o A bi-monthly bulletin containing news and articles of current interest, colour photos of monthly table orchid display awards with orchid names and commentaries
  • o An annual OSSEA publication “Malayan Orchid Review”, a glossy periodical with interesting articles and beautiful colour photos

 

  • Discounts on books and periodicals about orchids and orchid growing, including the very educational book “Orchid Growing In The Tropics” published by OSSEA; “A to Z of South East Asian Orchid Species” in two volumes; and “Orchid Hybrids of Singapore” all also published by OSSEA

  • An occasional Orchid Ball, a gala fundraising event graced by a VIP guest of honour. At the Ball, awards are presented to Master Hybridisers, auctions are conducted for naming rights to exquisite hybrids donated by top breeders and products exclusive to the event, and a lucky draw for various gifts is held.

 

  • – Free access to a Members’ Section in the OSSEA website where orchid photos, photo books and articles, as well as OSSEA’s bi-monthly bulletins may be viewed or downloaded. Only OSSEA members may access this Section.
